Pennsylvania CPE Information

Pennsylvania CPE Credits

The Pennsylvania Board of Accountancy requires active, licensed CPAs practicing in the state of Pennsylvania to earn a minimum of 80 hours of CPE credits every two years in order to maintain their CPA permit to practice. Of those 80 credit hours, 4 must be earned in ethics education, 8 in Taxation, and 16 in accounting & Attest. It is important to note that the 80 hours must be completed by December 31st of the second year of the permit renewal period, and must be reported a month later, by January 31st of the following year. A minimum of twenty (20) credit hours shall be taken each yer.

As a courtesy, the Board mails renewal notices two to three months prior to the license expiration date.  Notices are mailed to the most recent address the licensee has reported to the Board.

With regard to programs that qualify for CPE credits, the Board currently accepts formal CPE courses approved by the National Association of State Boards of Accounting (NASBA) and the Quality Assurance Standards (QAS). To view the registry of approved CPE Sponsors go to www.nasba.org. All 80 credit hours of the Pennsylvania CPE requirement may be earned through these pre-approved formal programs.

Other ways to earn CPE credits are through self-study programs (not to exceed 50% of CPE requirements), university and college courses (not to exceed 50% of CPE requirements), service on technical committees of professional organizations (not to exceed 16 credit hours of CPE requirements), instruction or presentation of programs (not to exceed 50% of CPE requirements), published articles/books (not to exceed 16 hours of CPE requirements), and quality enhancement programs and peer review programs (not to exceed 50% of CPE requirements). For additional information and frequently asked questions regarding Pennsylvania’s CPE requirements for CPA certification, please click here.
